Villa Lambda: A Futuristic Residential Villa Inspired by Lamborghini

A Unique Design that Balances Form and Function

Villa Lambda, designed by Mercurio Design Lab Srl, is a residential villa in Singapore that takes inspiration from the iconic Lamborghini Gallardo. With its radical shape and innovative design, this villa stands out as a futuristic masterpiece.

The inspiration behind Villa Lambda came from a scale model of the Lamborghini Gallardo. The designer, Mercurio Design Lab Srl, refined the idea of two inverted triangles slightly offset from each other. This geometric form was transformed into a house that bears a resemblance to the Greek letter lambda, giving the villa its name.

What sets Villa Lambda apart is its unique structure. The house is built using two inverted triangles, with one triangle rounded at the rear to provide shading to the bedroom underneath. The other triangle extends to form a dramatic car porch canopy, cantilevering out and supporting two supplementary canopies for car protection. The result is a villa that resembles a spaceship more than a traditional residential structure.

Technologically, Villa Lambda is a marvel. The house appears monumental yet touches the earth lightly with its glazed walls set back inside a white concrete frame. Its sleek modernity is enhanced by its pearl white glossy paint finish, solid glazing, low e performance glass, and elegant aluminum louvred front canopies. The Alubond roofing, slightly pitched and in stark contrast to the neighboring buildings, adds to the villa's unique aesthetic.

The villa spans a built area of 1500 sqm and is spread across a basement, two storeys, and an attic. The dining hall, rising over two storeys, serves as the hub of the house. The second storey features two symmetrical bedrooms, each with its own distinct style. The attic space includes a large study with a custom red-painted table and a terrace. Additionally, the attic provides three smaller rooms, including a prayer room. The basement houses service rooms, a gym, a sauna, and a wooden wine cellar.

Villa Lambda was completed in 2013 after a design process that began in 2011. The design team faced challenges in complying with the regulations for habitable attic spaces in a bungalow, which have restrictive codes. However, they found an aesthetic solution that adhered to the unique and futuristic style of Villa Lambda. The design also had to optimize a tight site and provide parking for nine cars.

Villa Lambda has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2015 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Villa Lambda's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

Villa Lambda is a weightless building that showcases the possibilities of modern architecture. Its exoskeleton, a space frame containing the house, is the only structure visible. The composition of two cantilevered triangles, with one chamfered at the rear for added aerodynamic quality, creates a delicately poised design. The largely glazed walls set back from the exoskeleton add to the villa's impression of balance and elegance. Generous eaves and canopies provide privacy and sun protection, completing the villa's unique aesthetic.
